Introdução
The literature discusses relationships using some isolated ESG pillars (environmental, social, or governance) as mediators between innovation and organizational performance, but there are gaps in studies that address the integrated ESG construct as a mediator in the relationship between organizational ambidexterity and organizational performance. This study investigates the mediating effect of ESG on this relationship in basic sanitation companies in Brazil. Companies with sustainable solutions aligned with ESG principles increase their contribution to cleaner and more sustainable environments
Problema de Pesquisa e Objetivo
Given the need to understand the roles and models of ESG in interaction with organizational ambidexterity and organizational performance—considering the relevance of the topic and the need to deepen the understanding of the relationships among these elements—this study raises the following research question: What is the mediating effect of ESG on the relationship between Organizational Ambidexterity and Organizational Performance in basic sanitation companies in Brazil?
Fundamentação Teórica
Ambidextrous companies increase sales and improve their performance because the balance between exploration and exploitation activities allows for the optimization of resources and the promotion of innovative processes (Severgnini et al., 2018). Organizational performance is one of the most investigated dependent variables in management research and is essential for the growth and expansion of organizations (Forte et al., 2022). ESG reflects companies' commitment to reducing environmental impacts and adopting sustainable, socially responsible, and good governance practices (Sadiq et al., 2023)
Metodologia
The research is classified as quantitative, exploratory, descriptive, and explanatory, conducted through structural equation modeling and multigroup analysis. The population of this study comprises 631 companies in the sanitation sector in Brazil. Questionnaires were sent via email between November 7, 2023, and March 10, 2024, targeted at the top executives of organizations in the sector located across the five regions of Brazil. We obtained a sample of 100 companies (54 large-sized and 46 medium-sized) from the sector.
Análise dos Resultados
ESG practices positively impact organizational performance, and organizational ambidexterity positively influences ESG. Furthermore, ESG's relevance as a partial mediator between innovation capacity and organizational performance was observed. A multigroup analysis revealed that company size affects the relationships between organizational ambidexterity and ESG, as well as between ESG and performance, with distinctions between medium-sized and large companies. However, the relationship between organizational ambition and organizational performance was not significant.
Conclusão
ESG practices in the sanitation sector act as partial mediators in the relationship between organizational ambidexterity and organizational performance. This allows managers to assess the model's impacts on their operations, recognize the relevance of ESG practices for the organization and society, and identify the most effective strategies to achieve the desired performance. The positive results advance research on ESG, organizational ambidexterity, and organizational performance, encouraging more sustainable management across all environmental, social, and governance dimensions.
Contribuição / Impacto
This theoretical contribution proposes and analyzes a conceptual model that integrates the constructs of organizational ambidexterity, ESG, and organizational performance, highlighting the role of ESG as a mediator in the relationship between organizational ambidexterity and performance. In practice, the research has significant implications for the basic sanitation sector in Brazil, indicating that adopting practices aligned with ESG principles can improve organizational performance, promote cleaner and safer environments, and contribute to public health.
