Resumo
Introdução
Consumption, as both a daily practice and a complex social phenomenon, has increasingly been challenged by sustainability agendas. This article investigates how Brazilian social movements—Instituto Akatu, IDEC, and Greenpeace—promote sustainable consumption through educational, political, and symbolic actions. Based on a multiple case study, the analysis reveals strategic dimensions that reframe consumption as a site of citizenship and social transformation.
Problema de Pesquisa e Objetivo

Research Objective
To examine how Brazilian social movements—Instituto Akatu, IDEC, and Greenpeace—promote sustainable consumption by mobilizing civic engagement, shaping consumer values, and advocating structural transformations through educational, legal, and activist strategies.

Research Objective
To examine how Brazilian social movements—Instituto Akatu, IDEC, and Greenpeace—promote sustainable consumption by mobilizing civic engagement, shaping consumer values, and advocating structural transformations through educational, legal, and activist strategies.
Fundamentação Teórica
Sustainable consumption is understood as a socio-political process shaped by cultural values, power relations, and collective action. Drawing on Scherer-Warren’s model (2013), the study explores how social movements articulate material, symbolic, and political dimensions to challenge consumerist norms, promote citizenship, and foster systemic change through practices grounded in justice, care, and sustainability.
Metodologia
This is a qualitative, exploratory, and multiple case study research. Data were collected through document analysis, non-participant observation, and eight semi-structured interviews with representatives from Instituto Akatu, IDEC, and Greenpeace Brazil. The material was coded and analyzed using ATLAS.ti software, based on Scherer-Warren’s three analytical dimensions: material life, symbolic value, and political empowerment.
Análise dos Resultados
The findings reveal how the three organizations engage with sustainable consumption through distinct but complementary approaches. Akatu focuses on behavioral change and education; IDEC emphasizes rights, regulation, and empowerment; Greenpeace advocates for environmental justice through activism. These strategies reflect material, symbolic, and political dimensions, illustrating the role of social movements in reshaping consumption and fostering civic engagement.
Conclusão
The study highlights the strategic role of social movements in advancing sustainable consumption by integrating education, activism, and rights advocacy. Akatu, IDEC, and Greenpeace Brazil demonstrate how collective action can reframe consumption as a political and ethical practice. Their initiatives contribute to sustainability transitions by promoting equity, participation, and systemic change aligned with the 2030 Agenda.
Contribuição / Impacto
This study contributes to the understanding of sustainable consumption as a socio-political process and emphasizes the role of civil society in driving systemic change. By analyzing the practices of Akatu, IDEC, and Greenpeace Brazil, it reveals how social movements influence behavior, reshape public discourse, and promote sustainability governance, offering insights for both academic research and policy development.
