Resumo

Introdução

Frugal Innovations (FIs) are simple, accessible, and high-quality solutions developed through the creative use of limited resources, especially aimed at populations at the base of the pyramid (BoP). They emerge in response to institutional voids and unmet social needs, leveraging local knowledge, social networks, and appropriate technologies to generate inclusive and sustainable solutions. Researchers recognize the potential of FIs to promote sustainable development, as they inherently address economic, social, and environmental concerns in resource-constrained contexts.

Problema de Pesquisa e Objetivo

In Latin America, where socio-spatial and environmental challenges are significant, frugal innovation offers locally adapted solutions. Intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, these vulnerabilities highlight frugal innovation as a strategy for social inclusion and post-crisis recovery. This study explores its effects on vulnerable populations, asking: how can frugal innovation and its business models contribute in the post-pandemic Latin American context?

Fundamentação Teórica

The literature shows that Latin America, marked by inequalities and institutional fragility, was heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, deepening existing vulnerabilities. In response, Frugal Innovations (FIs) offer simple, affordable, and locally adapted solutions, especially for low-income populations. While research on FIs in the region remains limited, cases from countries like Brazil and Colombia highlight growing interest from universities, entrepreneurs. The pandemic further emphasized the potential of FIs to address resource gaps and support a more inclusive and resilient recovery.

Discussão

The discussion shows that Frugal Innovation (FI) became especially relevant after COVID-19 by providing low-cost, sustainable solutions in vulnerable contexts. While its value is recognized globally, research on FI remains limited in Latin America, with notable gaps in theory and practice. Greater academic, governmental, and business engagement is needed to explore its potential for sustainable development in the region.

Conclusão

The analysis of 43 articles reveals limited research on FI in Latin America, despite some cases in Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia. Amid the region's complex challenges, intensified by COVID-19, FIs show potential to support the BoP, but require greater involvement from governments, companies, and universities. While some see FIs as palliative, others view them as drivers of sustainable development. This study highlights the need to expand FI research globally, respecting regional specificities and sustainability goals.

Contribuição / Impacto

The article examines how Frugal Innovation (FI) and its business models can contribute to sustainable development in post-Covid-19 Latin America. Through an integrative review of 43 articles, the study highlights the potential of FIs to promote social inclusion, reduce inequalities, and generate accessible solutions in resource-scarce contexts. It fills a gap in the literature by focusing on the Latin American reality and calls for greater engagement from universities, governments, and companies. The study also emphasizes the need for further empirical research on FI in the region.
