Reumo

In today’s dynamic labor market, careers evolve rapidly due to globalization, technological advancements, and constant changes. Traditional paths give way to models of continuous learning and adaptability (Andrade et al., 2011). Business Administration’s multidisciplinary approach is crucial for versatile skills (Maximiniano, 2002). Hall (1976) shows a trend toward self-defined success, with Protean and Boundaryless Careers prioritizing autonomy and self-fulfillment (Hall, 2002; Arthur, 1994).
Amidst labor market transformations, especially the shift from traditional to Protean and Boundaryless Careers, this research explores: How does the transition from traditional to Boundaryless or Protean Careers occur in the evolving market dynamics? This qualitative, exploratory study analyzes career trajectories of managers actively managing their careers, examining the impact of emerging labor market trends on their professional journeys. These new career models emphasize continuous learning, adaptability, and self-defined success.
The job market, originating in the Industrial Revolution, has evolved, demanding new employment relationships (Hall, 2002). Career management shifted from internal progression to external talent sourcing (Mineva et al., 2020). Flexibility is crucial in modern careers (Aquino et al., 2014; Chiavenato, 2012). Traditional paths valued by Baby Boomers are now replaced by adaptable models (Comazzetto et al., 2016). The concepts of Boundaryless and Protean Careers emphasize autonomy, continuous learning, and personal fulfillment (Hall, 2002; Arthur, 1994; Briscoe et al., 2006).
This qualitative study, explores in-depth phenomena and human behavior. Data collection involved scientific articles, podcasts from Spotify, and semi-structured interviews. Interviews, guided by a script, focused on career development, relocation perceptions, and challenges of non-traditional careers. Conducted in March 2024 via Microsoft Teams, they were transcribed and analyzed using Bardin’s (2011) and NVivo® software was used to check word recurrences and generate word clouds, finalizing each analysis dimension and addressing the research question to achieve the study's objectives.
