Introdução
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a long-standing topic, with forerunners like Turing (1996) and Simon (1969) anticipating its impact. The recent rise of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI), which creates new content from existing data, represents a technological inflection point. This advancement imposes a paradoxical scenario, where innovative benefits coexist with ethical, strategic, and operational dilemmas, creating tensions that require in-depth investigation.
Problema de Pesquisa e Objetivo
The research problem guiding this study is: "What is the landscape of scientific production in the field of the paradoxes of Generative Artificial Intelligence?". The main objective is to map and critically analyze the scientific literature on the topic, identifying conceptual, methodological, and applied gaps. Based on this analysis, the study seeks to propose a research agenda to ground new investigations and organizational management practices in the face of the emerging tensions of GAI.
Fundamentação Teórica
The central theory of the study is the paradox perspective, which analyzes contradictory and interdependent tensions. It adopts the view of Mick and Fournier (1998), who define a paradox as the coexistence of opposites (X and not-X), and of Lewis (2000; 2014), who describes it as tensions that both challenge and nurture long-term success. This theoretical lens allows for going beyond the simple distinction between positive and negative, seeking more sustainable ways to use the technology.
Discussão
The analysis of the 166 articles revealed a significant increase in publications starting in 2022, with 98.1% of authors having only one paper on the topic, which indicates the novelty of the field. The studies are concentrated in the areas of health and education. The majority of the papers (97) were categorized as "opportunities and challenges," addressing the pros and cons of GAI superficially, without delving into the complexity of paradoxical tensions—a scenario similar to what Mick and Fournier (1998) observed in their time.
Conclusão
The study concludes that, despite the exponential growth of interest in GAI, the theoretical approach from a paradox perspective remains incipient. Most of the literature adopts a superficial view of "challenges and opportunities," failing to capture the complexity of the simultaneous and contradictory tensions inherent in the technology. The work reinforces the need for deeper investigations that use the paradox lens to guide the sustainable implementation and use of GAI, proposing a research agenda to direct future studies.
Contribuição / Impacto
The main contribution of this study is the identification of a relevant theoretical gap in the literature on GAI: the scarce application of the paradox perspective to analyze its implications. By mapping the field and categorizing the existing studies, the work offers a critical overview that serves as a basis for theoretical and practical advancement. The proposal of a structured research agenda offers a clear guide for future investigations, contributing to a more robust and sustainable management of generative technologies.
