Introdução
In recent years, food banks have implemented multiple innovations that transformed their role in addressing food insecurity. This paper reviews literature from 2020-2024 focusing on how innovations across management, services and growth strategies impact food banks worldwide. Focusing on the gap between small-medium sized food banks and larger ones by contextualizing through Banco de Alimentos de la Arquidiócesis de Zipaquirá (BADIZI) in Colombia. The research looks to identify global best practices and adapt them to improve local efficiency and sustainability.
Problema de Pesquisa e Objetivo
Despite worldwide innovations, small food banks in developing regions struggle to adapt to these advancements due to limited resources. The study aims to identify practices in advanced systems of food banks in order to find actionable strategies for operational sustainability in small-medium sized local food banks like BADIZI.
Fundamentação Teórica
The study was supported by the absorptive capacity theory, developed by Zou, Ertyg, and George (2018). It describes how organizations acquire, internalize, and apply external knowledge to foster innovations. It aligns with the objective of the study as the authors consider that small-medium sized enterprises are usually better positioned to take advantage of external innovations due to their structures and constant search for knowledge.
Based on the theory, three pillars of analysis were used: (1) Beneficiary services, (2) Management innovations, and (3) Sustainability strategies.

Metodologia
The literature review was done using Scopus and Taylor & Frances sources, focusing on 2020-2024 articles through an exploratory data analysis, known for its ability to maximize insight into a dataset (Tukey, 1977). Keywords like “food banks” and “food security” filtered 562 articles, with 70 selected after an abstract review. The data obtained was analyzed for trends in management, services and sustainability, cross-referenced with Google for validation, and applied to BADIZI’s context by using a qualitative comparison.
Análise dos Resultados
The analysis of the 70 articles revealed that North America leads innovation with management initiatives and sustainability as key themes. However, small-medium sized food banks like BADIZI lack logistics management and technology integration compared to their global counterparts. Innovation enhances efficiency but requires local adaptation as a first step, making visible a need for community partnerships and basic technology to boost impact.
Conclusão
Innovations are fundamental to improve global food bank efficiency, but inequalities exist, especially for small-medium sized food banks like BADIZI. Adapting global practices and initiatives with local solutions as community partners and basic tech is a way to improve sustainability and efficiency to close the gap with developed countries.
Contribuição / Impacto
The study gives a framework for small food banks to adopt global innovations effectively, improving their sustainable and operative impact. It highlights the need for localized strategies in developing regions while findings contribute to food security discourse. It demonstrates how models centered in communities can integrate basic digital tools and SDG-aligned metrics under the right management innovations
